How to develop timing and how to count to play precisely off beat and quarter note triplet?

Skipping the main note of the bar is a difficult task for a beginner drummer, but an advanced drummer is also working on precision.

How to strengthen the sense of rhythm? You have to consciously find yourself in tact, by properly counting and using hand patterns. I will show you a few tips on some examples.

1.Eight Note Off Beat

Start with the eighths played as single strokes - right and left play in turns. To precisely hit off beat (on "and"), move your right hand from the snare drum to another place, mute your right hand - e.g. hit with your right hand in the air or on your leg and leave your left hand on the snare drum alone.

When your hitting with the left hand on "and" becomes comfortable, remove the right hand and hit only with the left. Then hit the right and left in turns, accurately hitting "and".

2. Sixteen and Sixteen Note Triplet Off Beat

You need to use the same principle as before in the sixteen exercise - playing the single stroke pattern with your right and left hand, take your right hand away, leaving only the left, stroking sixteenth after each eight in a bar.

Use your right hand to stroke as before - in the air or in the leg. Then hit only the left off beat and then switch hands - right and left playing off beat alternately.

Do the same with the sixteen note triplet - remove your right hand, then hit the beat alternately - once with your right hand and once with your left hand, etc.

3.Quarter Note Triplet

How to precisely calculate and play a "larger" triplet, or a triplet that lasts half a measure?

You can use a similar principle as before, but this time remove the left hand.

First, play the single stroke roll eight note triplets - right and left, then leave the right one alone and get the quarter note triplet from the eight note triplet.

Simple? Sure. Effective? Of course!

Good luck with the exercises, of course, more examples in the practical part of today's lesson!
